A variety of dental care is covered by our plans so long as the pet parent has taken the necessary steps to ensure that their pet’s teeth have been routinely examined and cleaned upon recommendations from your vet. If a pet parent has neglected to care for their pet’s dental health and contrary to your veterinarian’s recommendations, then dental coverage may not be covered. Read on for further information on what’s covered and what is not.
How Does Prudent Pet’s Dental Coverage Work?
Both our Accident-Only and Accident+Illness policies will cover extractions due to injury (i.e. broken tooth). The Accident+Illness policy will also pay for extractions and dental cleanings secondary to illness or injury as long as it was not pre-existing before or during the waiting period.
- Extractions will be covered if after the course of a routine dental cleaning, the veterinarian performs necessary extractions. In this scenario, the routine dental cleaning is not covered, but the extractions that took place during the routine cleaning would be covered.
- If a pet owner is bringing the pet in specifically for extractions and the veterinarian performs a dental cleaning because it is medically necessary to avoid infection, then both the extractions and the dental cleaning will be covered.
- If grade 3 or higher dental disease is noted prior to the start of the policy or within the waiting periods (this is considered pre-existing), any non-routine dental procedures will be deemed as pre-existing and not eligible for coverage moving forward. Having a dental cleaning does not “reset” the condition as damage has already been done.
- Grades 1 and 2 dental disease will be considered ‘curable’ if a dental cleaning is performed and pet subsequently goes 12 months treatment free.
The coverage for the procedures under your Accident-Only or Accident+Illness policy will be reimbursed based on your policy selections. Like human health insurance, you must meet your annual deductible before you can get reimbursed. The percentage you receive back is based on the reimbursement percentage you chose when you purchased the policy.
